Culture & Language Learning Practicum

This semester has been our practicum expereince. The training has simulated, in a small context, what the first four stages of learning culture and language are like. These are pictures of us with our language helper Yogalo (yes he is a professor dressed up). We have been working on learning a real culture that is being simulated here. To do this we have watched skits of cultural events, had sessions with the language helper, and read notes from the missionary who is "also there in the tribe" (he is pretend). We started at the beginning not knowing any of the language and had session where we worked on learning the language. Then at the end we were "fluent" (or in other words switched to English) so that we could study the culture. It was a very challenging expereince, but we learned so much through it. It is amazing all the work that goes into making this simulation possible and as real as it can be. This last week we ended by writing a paper on the themes present in the Dobu culture. In another class we will talk about how we would plant a church in this tribe.
